I remember applying for my first card and then spending the following week walking past the letterbox every morning, wondering whether something had gone wrong. Nothing had. I simply had no idea what a normal wait looked like, and none of the pages I found at the time gave me a straight answer. So here is the straight answer, along with the thing I wish somebody had told me at the start: for most people, the plastic card landing on the doormat is not the moment you can start work. The short answer

CSCS quotes a delivery time of between five and ten working days for your card to arrive once your application has been approved. Treat that as a range rather than a promise. It is the figure CSCS itself gives, and as I explain further down, CSCS is not always consistent about it, so I would rather hand you the range than pick a number and pretend it is precise.

The more useful answer is that the wait for the plastic usually does not matter, because your card exists in digital form before the envelope is even posted.

You do not have to wait for the plastic card to start work

This is the part most people miss, and it is the single most useful thing on this page.

As soon as your application is approved, a digital CSCS card becomes available in the My CSCS app. You do not need to wait for the physical card to arrive before you go to site. The digital card is the same credential, held on your phone rather than in your wallet, and it is live from the moment approval comes through.

The end-to-end timeline, stage by stage

Getting a card is not one event, it is a sequence, and the postal delivery is the shortest part of it. Here is the whole thing in order.

• Sort the qualification for your role. Usually an NVQ or SVQ at the level your role requires, or a Level 1 award on the entry-level route. This is almost always the longest stage by a wide margin, and it varies enormously by qualification and training provider, so I am not going to put a number on it.
• Book and sit the CITB HS&E test. The test fee is £23.50, which applies from 1 April 2026. Slot availability varies by location and time of year, so book as early as you can rather than assuming something will be free next week.
• Get your result. The result is given to you at the test centre on the day, so there is no waiting stage here at all.
• Apply to CSCS. You apply through the My CSCS app or CSCS Online, submitting your qualification evidence, your test pass and a compliant photo. The card fee is £36, paid to CSCS separately from the test fee.
• Wait for approval. CSCS checks your evidence. In the ordinary run of things this takes a few working days, but it depends on your evidence and how busy CSCS is, and there is no guaranteed figure for it.
• Approval, then two things happen at once. Your digital card becomes available in the My CSCS app straight away, and your plastic card is posted to you by Royal Mail, arriving within the five to ten working days CSCS quotes.

One rule catches people out at the application stage: your HS&E test pass must have been taken within the last two years of your card application. Why the quoted delivery window varies

If you go looking, you will find CSCS quoting five working days in some places and ten in others, and plenty of third-party sites confidently stating numbers of their own that are not sourced from CSCS at all. I have deliberately not picked one. Where the source itself is inconsistent, the honest thing is to say so and give you the range.

In practice that means one thing: plan on the longer end, and treat anything faster as a bonus. Because the digital card is live from approval, the difference between the two ends of that range rarely costs you a day of work.

What can slow your application down

Nothing on this list stops you permanently, but each one adds a round trip, and a round trip costs far more time than the postal delivery ever will.

• A photo that does not meet the requirements. A rejected photo means resubmitting and starting the clock again. Passport-style, plain background, no hats or sunglasses.
• Qualification evidence that is unclear or incomplete. Make sure the certificate number, awarding body and level are all legible.
• A test pass that has fallen outside the two-year window. There is no way round this one, it means booking and paying for the test again.
• Applying for the wrong card for your role. Worth checking before you pay, not after.

What you pay, and when

Two fees, two organisations, at two different points in the process.

• £23.50 to CITB when you book the HS&E test. It is payable per attempt, so a fail means paying it again.
• £36 to CSCS when you apply for the card itself.

If your card has not turned up

First, open the My CSCS app. If the application has been approved, your digital card will be sitting there, and you can carry on working while the plastic makes its way to you.

If the delivery window CSCS gave you has passed and nothing has arrived, contact CSCS directly through the app or their website and ask them to check the status and the delivery address held on your application.
